Summer Camp for Children Battling Serious Illnesses in Southwest Miami-Dade
Children battling serious illnesses in Southwest Miami-Dade are experiencing a summer of fun at the UOTS summer camp. This week-long camp, hosted at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, provides a much-needed break for 32 children currently fighting cancer and blood disorders. It offers them a chance to enjoy exciting activities and time away from the hospital environment.
Exciting Adventures at Universal Studios and More
As part of the camp experience, the children had the opportunity to visit Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida for two days earlier in the week. The final day of the camp is filled with a pool party, go-kart racing, and swimming, giving the kids a chance to create lasting memories and have fun.
Impactful Treatment and Bonding with Staff
Dr. Athena Pefkarou, the children’s oncologist, highlighted the importance of the camp in the treatment of cancer patients. She mentioned that the camp allows the children to take a break from the hospital environment, giving them a chance to have experiences they wouldn’t typically get. Additionally, the children form strong bonds with the staff, many of whom are former campers who have survived childhood cancer diagnoses.
Overall, the UOTS summer camp is a valuable and uplifting experience for children battling serious illnesses. It provides them with moments of joy, fun, and connection, helping them in their treatment journey.
