Back-to-School Update: Florida Schools Ready to Reopen After Hurricane Debbie
TAMPA, Fla. – Despite minor damage caused by Hurricane Debbie, Tampa Bay area schools are set to reopen on Monday, August 12. The Pasco County, Citrus County, Manatee County, Hernando County, and Hillsborough County school districts have all addressed any issues and are prepared for the return of students.
Pasco County Schools Gear Up for Monday
In Pasco County, a few schools experienced minor damage, such as scattered roof leaks. However, all necessary repairs have been completed, and officials have confirmed that the schools are safe for students and staff to return.
Varied Impacts Across Counties
Citrus County’s Homosassa Elementary School was surrounded by floodwaters, but thankfully, the water did not damage the school. In Manatee County, minor roof leaks and air conditioning issues were fixed promptly before the start of the school year. Hernando County was fortunate to escape any damage from the hurricane but did open West Hernando Middle School as an emergency shelter over the weekend.
Preparations in Hillsborough County
Hillsborough County also took steps to ensure the safety of students and faculty. Erwin Tech was opened as a shelter, and any minor issues at other schools in the county were promptly addressed. The collective efforts of these counties have allowed for a smooth reopening process.
