Combat Mosquito Infestation in Hillsborough County with Free Fish Event
Hillsborough County is taking proactive steps to address the potential mosquito population surge following Hurricane Debbie. To combat this issue, the county is hosting a free mosquito eradication event in Lithia on Saturday. This event is part of a monthly program that aims to provide homeowners with free mosquito-eating fish to help control mosquito populations on their properties.
The event is crucial because the increased standing water in the area post-hurricane could lead to a significant rise in mosquito numbers if not managed effectively. With 40 different species of mosquitoes in the Tampa Bay area, the risk of diseases being spread is a serious concern.

Utilizing Mosquito-Eating Fish for Effective Control
One of the key strategies recommended by Paolo Percora, an environmental scientist in Hillsborough County, is the use of mosquito-eating fish to combat the mosquito population. Percora suggests stocking these fish in various environments and habitats such as water reduction areas, cisterns, stormwater cisterns, livestock troughs, unused swimming pools, water gardens, small fishponds, and lakes where these fish can breed and function effectively.
By strategically placing these fish in different water sources, homeowners can significantly reduce the mosquito population in their vicinity and contribute to overall mosquito control efforts in the county.
Join the Effort: Free Mosquito Fish Distribution Event
The free mosquito fish distribution event is scheduled to take place on August 10 from 8am to 12pm at the FishHawk Sports Center in Lithia. This is a unique opportunity for Hillsborough County residents to proactively address the mosquito issue in their area and contribute to the overall public health and safety.
