Boar’s Head Listeria Outbreak: What You Need to Know
Recall of Boar’s Head deli meat products has been widely expanded, with federal officials expressing concern about a deadly listeria outbreak in the United States. The initial recall includes an additional 3,500 tons of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products sold under the Boar’s Head and Old Country brands, according to the USDA. Approximately 103 tons of Boar’s Head products were also recalled last week.
Recall Details and Concerns
The USDA states that the recall encompasses a total of 71 products produced between May 10 and July 29, with a shelf life from July 29th to October 17th. The issue came to light when a liverwurst sample collected from a Baltimore-area store tested positive for the same USDA strain responsible for the outbreak. As of the latest data, the listeria outbreak has affected at least 34 people in 13 states, resulting in two deaths. The recalled products were distributed nationwide and to several international destinations.
Symptoms and Handling Guidelines
Consumers should be aware of potential listeria infection symptoms, which typically include fever, muscle aches, vomiting, and diarrhea. Pregnant women, individuals over 65, and those with weakened immune systems may experience severe symptoms. If you suspect you have consumed a recalled product, it is advised to monitor your health closely. Listeria infection can cause serious complications in certain populations, including pregnant women and newborns.
It is crucial to practice safe food handling and hygiene, especially when it comes to deli meat products. Dr. Nidhi Kumar, a cardiovascular disease expert, recommends thoroughly cleaning refrigerators if they have stored recalled meats. The CDC suggests seeking medical attention if you experience symptoms related to listeria infection.
