Hurricane Debbie Relief Efforts Begin in Manatee County, Florida
Federal Emergency Management Agency Disaster Survivor Assistance crews have launched relief efforts in Manatee County following the devastating impact of Hurricane Debbie. On Monday, FEMA workers began surveying communities affected by the hurricane, starting with the Summerfield Glades neighborhood.
Assessing the Damage in Summerfield Glades
Experts from FEMA went door-to-door in the Summerfield Glades neighborhood, where streets are still lined with debris and storm cleanup equipment. Residents like Richard Myers, who has lived in the neighborhood for nearly three decades, are facing challenges due to floodwaters.
“I have two cars in my garage and we can’t get them out because the street is three to three and a half feet deep,” Myers shared. Despite the significant damage to his home, he considers himself fortunate to have flood insurance and support from FEMA adjusters.
Providing Assistance to Residents in Need
Some residents in the affected areas may not realize they need to register with FEMA for assistance. Nate Custer, a FEMA official, highlighted the importance of reaching out to residents who may be in cleanup mode but require additional support. FEMA is committed to helping families navigate through the recovery process.
Transitioning from rescue to recovery mode, FEMA is actively engaging with communities to provide guidance on coping with the aftermath of Hurricane Debbie. From registering for aid to accessing resources, FEMA is working to ensure that residents have the support they need during this challenging time.
Opening of Disaster Recovery Center in Sarasota
In addition to field assessments, FEMA has established a Disaster Recovery Center in Sarasota to provide in-person support to residents. The center, located at 2923 Ashton Road, serves as a hub for individuals seeking assistance with recovery efforts, registration, and access to resources.
As FEMA continues to mobilize resources and support for communities impacted by Hurricane Debbie, residents are encouraged to reach out for assistance and guidance in the recovery process. The collaboration between FEMA, local officials, and residents is crucial in rebuilding and restoring affected areas.
