Preparing Seniors for Hurricane Season: What You Need to Know
As hurricane season approaches, the city of St. Petersburg is hosting a special expo aimed at providing crucial information to seniors. The workshop, taking place at the Sunshine Senior Center, will cover a variety of topics to help seniors prepare for potential storms.
Key Information for Seniors
The expo will kick off with informative demonstrations and conclude with a Q&A session during the Ice Cream Social. It will be held at the Sunshine Senior Center from 1 to 2:30 p.m., and pre-registration is encouraged for the Hurricane Expo for Seniors.
Topics Covered at the Expo
Seniors attending the expo can expect to learn about finding evacuation areas, developing evacuation and safety plans, managing medical issues during evacuations, using 911 during a storm, and protecting themselves and their property post-storm. Experts from Emergency Management, Pinellas County Safety and Emergency Services, and the Bureau of Consumer Protection will be on hand to answer questions.
Carole Ware, a representative from the Sunshine Center, noted that a record number of 80 seniors have already signed up for the expo, a clear indication of the community’s awareness of the potential risks posed by the upcoming hurricane season. She emphasized the importance of preparedness, expressing concerns that those who fail to plan ahead may find themselves in serious trouble once a storm hits the Tampa Bay area.
Encouraging Senior Participation
Seniors who are interested in attending Thursday’s expo are encouraged to register promptly. The event aims to equip seniors with the knowledge and resources they need to stay safe and prepared during hurricane season. By taking proactive steps now, seniors can better protect themselves and their loved ones in the event of a storm.
