Vice President Kamala Harris Gains Democratic Nomination and Heads to Wisconsin
After quickly gaining the support of enough Democratic delegates to become the party’s nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris will head to the battleground state of Wisconsin for a rally, her first stop in a swing state as a presidential candidate.
Harris is heading to the Badger State, which has the support of numerous Democrats including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who has her coffers filled with donations. The newly elected presidential candidate has raised more than $100 million since announcing his candidacy, including more than $81 million in 24 hours, setting a presidential fundraising record.
Harris’s Political Unity and Campaign Success
Harris received enough delegates Monday night to clinch the nomination, according to an Associated Press survey of state parties. Her swift unity marks the party’s attempt to put behind weeks of internecine drama surrounding Biden’s political prospects and unite in a shared effort to defeat Trump just over 100 days before Election Day. Prominent Democratic elected officials, party leaders, and political organizations were quick to back Harris the day after Biden dropped out of the race.
Several state delegations met Monday night to confirm their support for Harris, including Texas and her home state of California. By Monday night, Harris had garnered the support of at least 2,471 delegates, more than the 1,976 she needed to win on the first ballot, according to an AP delegate count. Representatives contacted by The Associated Press nominated no other candidates.
Campaign Focus and Future Visions
In a statement after her nomination, Harris said she was “grateful to President Biden and everyone in the Democratic Party for their confidence in me, and I look forward to taking our case directly to the American people.” She emphasized the importance of choosing between two different visions for the country’s future, contrasting her beliefs with those of Donald Trump. Harris reiterated her commitment to strengthening democracy, protecting reproductive freedoms, and ensuring equal opportunities for all Americans.
Harris also addressed the agenda of Project 2025, emphasizing the need to move forward and not return to policies that would weaken the middle class. She made it clear that the campaign is about choosing a vision for the future rather than focusing on opposition to Trump.
