The Record-Breaking Heat Wave in Las Vegas
(CNN) — Las Vegas is currently facing an unprecedented heat wave, with seven consecutive days of temperatures reaching 115 degrees or higher. This summer has been the hottest in U.S. history, breaking records and setting new benchmarks for extreme heat.
The Impact of the Extreme Heat
About 100 cities across the United States, from Maine to California, are experiencing their hottest summer on record. The National Weather Service reports that extreme heat is a leading cause of weather-related deaths in the country. In July alone, at least 37 people died from heat-related illnesses, with many of the deaths occurring in the Western part of the country.
Warnings and Precautions
As the heat wave continues to grip the West, heat warnings have been issued for large portions of California, Nevada, Arizona, and Utah. It is essential for everyone to take precautions, especially those who are more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses such as children, the elderly, pregnant women, and outdoor workers. The National Weather Service emphasizes the importance of staying hydrated, staying cool, and avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun.
Despite the extreme temperatures, the heat is expected to gradually ease over the weekend in the West, while spreading to the East. While the region typically experiences hot weather in July, this summer has seen record-breaking highs that pose a significant risk to public health.
