Nine feet underwater in a canal along West Broward Avenue in Plantation, a diver made a remarkable discovery that would reopen a decades-old cold case. The diver, part of the Sunshine State Sonar team, retrieved an object from a corroded car’s roof that led to the recovery of human remains along with baby toys and little girl’s clothes.
Uncovering Clues to the Past
Volunteers from Sunshine State Sonar, along with local law enforcement, unearthed a 1960s Chevrolet Impala from the canal, with bones inside believed to belong to an adult and a child. The evidence pointed to the remains of Doris Wurst and her 3-year-old daughter Caren, who went missing in November 1974.
Through meticulous search efforts, the team found vintage baby toys and children’s clothes, as well as a Fisher-Price school desk toy from the 1970s.
