The Transition to Login.gov: Important Update from the Social Security Administration
If you recently received an email from the Social Security Administration, it is crucial not to ignore it. The agency has announced that millions of people with online My Social Security accounts created before September 18, 2021, will need to switch to Login.gov accounts to continue accessing their information.
Why the Switch is Necessary
The SSA has stated that all users will soon require a Login.gov or ID.me account to access their Social Security accounts and other online services. Over 5 million account holders have already made the transition as part of an effort to streamline secure login and access to online services. As of June, approximately 46 million out of 86 million people with My Social Security accounts need to move to Login.gov accounts to maintain access to online services.
Benefits of the Upgrade
The Social Security Administration hopes that the transition to Login.gov will help address long wait times for callers to its 800 number. The average wait time was 24 minutes in April, down from 42 minutes in November. My Social Security accounts are free and provide personalized tools for users, whether they receive benefits or not. The service allows for applying and managing benefits, estimating future benefits, and requesting replacement Social Security cards.
How to Make the Transition
Social Security Commissioner Martin O’Malley has praised the upgrade as a safe and secure way for people to do business with the agency. The agency encourages My Social Security account holders to log in, where they will have the option to switch to Login.gov. Once accounts are linked, a confirmation screen will appear, granting access to personal Social Security services and other tools. Existing Login.gov or ID.me account holders do not need to create new accounts or take any additional action.
By implementing this change, the Social Security Administration aims to improve user experience and streamline access to its online services. Make sure to follow the instructions in the email you received to ensure uninterrupted access to your Social Security information.
